Sendratari Ramayana is a ballet performance that is so beautiful, admiring and it is difficult to compare. This performance is able to unite various Javanese arts such as dance, drama and music on one stage and one momentum to present the Ramayana story, a legendary epos written by Walmiki in Sanskrit language. Ramayana story presented in this performance is similar to that engraved on the Prambanan Temple. The long and straining story is summarized in four scenes, namely the kidnapping of Shinta, Anoman’s mission to Alengka, the death of Kumbakarna or Rahwana, and the meeting of Rama-Shinta. The entire story is presented in a series of dance movements done by beautiful dancers accompanied by gamelan music. You are invited to really plunge into the story and observe each movement of the dancers to know the coarse of the story. There is no dialog among the dancers. The only storyteller is the sinden or the female singer who describes the coarse of the story through Javanese songs with her typical voice.
Prambanan Temple as the background for the ballet also has its own legend and myth. Prambanan temple known as the Thousand Temples was built in one night by Bandung Bondowoso to propose Roro Jonggrang. She was the princess of the Prambanan Kingdom. Bandung Bondowoso became the new king in Prambanan after defeated the Kingdom and killed the former king.
It turned to a love story because Bandung Bondowoso had crush on and proposed to her. It was hard for her either to accept or reject Bandung Bondowoso’s love. To avoid more violence, she commanded Bandung Bondowoso to build thousand temples and two deep wells in one night. If Bandung Bondowoso could fill the command, she would accept Bondowoso’s love. It seemed to be an impossible command to be fulfilled, but Bandung Bondowoso accepted it. Bandung Bondowoso tried to find some help from his father, a man with a supernatural power, which had a lot of supernatural armies. They worked so fast, and after 4 o’clock in the morning, there were only 5 temples which hadn’t built. Besides that, the wells were almost finished. She found out that Bandung Bondowoso almost made it. She felt very confuse and tried to find the way to make those efforts failed. Then, she ordered the women to pound the rice-mother and awaken the roosters to prematurely announce the dawn. Bandung Bondowoso’s armies were deceived by the false dawn, and they ran out. There was only one temple left, which should be built by Bandung Bondowoso. The next morning when Bandung Bondowoso found that his nearly successful efforts had failed, he was enraged and frustrated. He wooed Roro Jongggrang became a statue. Until now, the place where she remains is called Roro Jonggrang temple. The temples built by Bandung Bondowoso are now called Sewu Temple or Seribu Candi (The Thousand Temples).
